Radiologists have an old joke.
What’s the definition of a healthy person?
Somebody who hasn’t had a body CT yet.
Dr. Peter Rogers has spent 35 years reading scans, and he’s only half kidding. Put someone who feels fine through a scanner and something will turn up: a speck in the lung, a cyst on the liver, a shadow no one can quite name. Most are harmless. Each one still earns another scan. Then another.
Peter has a name for it. Radiology’s theme song, he says, is Hotel California. You can check out, but you can never leave.
In today’s video, he walks through real CT images and shows how one screening test can become years of follow-ups.
Some screening saves lives. This is about the many more scans that go looking for trouble.
