A new study put keto, Mediterranean, and a low-fat, “plant-forward” diet head to head. Every meal was provided, and all three groups lost the same weight. (Researchers controlled calories individually.)

Keto won on some measures that matter. Liver fat fell 67%, versus 45% on the other two diets.

I’ve eaten low-fat and plant-based for decades. I could have hunted for reasons to dismiss this study. I didn’t. It’s a well-run experiment.

But it leaves big questions open. What does it tell us about heart attacks, or living longer?
