Fill your diet with unprocessed plants. Lots and lots of veggies, fruit, whole grains, beans will supply needed nutrients. Think maximum nutrition in whatever you eat. Meat and dairy have problems, they supply nothing in the way of fiber, antioxidants, and too much protein, there is nothing in them that can't be more efficiently provided in plant foods and, like junk food, push nutrient-dense foods out of your diet.

Cut out the sugar also, sugar can depress the immune system. There are things that can help strengthen your immune system specifically, such as certain kinds of mushrooms (shiitake, reishi), but until your diet is made up of a maximum of unprocessed and/or minimally processed plant foods (no junk), it is useless to add herbs.

You might check out Joel Fuhrmann, his philosophy is one of maximizing nutrients in food.

Anecdotally, since I cut out meat and dairy around 1996 I have been sick only once. That includes sore throats and colds, I used to get them at least once a year. I do eat a diet full of plant foods, not much junk, never drink soda, don't eat much sugar except for fruit. And trying to get those greens in every day -- kale, collard greens, baby lettuces, spinach, parsley.
