You have mis-read the Lyon studies findings.

What it found was that a crete/traditional greek mediterranean style diet was capable of decreasing the death rate in individuals with coronary heart disease by up to 70%.

That is pretty impressive findings and should urge anyone with existing cardiovascular disease to look into the mediterranean diet.

As to eliminating the risk of heart disease in the first place,

Well like i said, you won't find a diet with more science or evidence based than the mediterrean diet, when it comes to reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the first place.

Its no surpise the science finds the mediterranean diet so effective at preventing heart disease, because it covers so many bases such as promoting a healthy inflammatory state through its 1:1 omega 6/3 ratio, the diet is high fiber, majority plant based diet rich in a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, wholegrains and other polyphenol rich foods etc, its a diet rich in powerful anti-inflammatory pre-formed omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA/DHA and so on.

Simply put there is no other diet currently with the equivelent research in the heart health preventation department at this stage.
