High cholesterol is a signal that something isn't going right. Which can also relate to the thyroid gland and liver. But again its just a symptom and not the true cause of heart disease here.

The latest science is showing that the true cause of heart disease is actually arterial inflammation.

Some causes of arterial inflammation include diabetes, elevated homo-cysteine(the studies show vegans often have elevated homo-cysteine levels due to b12 deficiency), lowered adrenal function and so on.

Cholesterol is the healing agent the body releases in response to injury or inflammation, without cholesterol you would be dead, as cholesterol is one of the vital pre-cursors to adrenal steroid hormones such as cortisol.

However if the source of the inflammation isn't removed, then the cholesterol begins to build up and then we have the beginnings of arterial plaque formation.

However its not fair to blame cholesterol here or even saturated fats, because its inflammation which is the true root cause of heart disease.

TSM: Thanks, I forgot all about Dr Stephen Sinatra and his Great Cholesterol myth. He is another who has read the latest research and agrees that inflammation is the true cause of heart disease.

As i said 5 posts back, i don't disagree that many animal foods can cause inflammation, especially consumed in excessive quantities. Many animal foods are a source of the pro-inflammatory omega-6 fat arachidonic acid. However that doesn't meant that these foods are bad or that we should avoid them completely, plenty other foods can cause inflammation consumed in high amounts.

These animal foods also supply nutrients such as vitamin B12, vitamin D, omega-3 fats such as DHA and others nutrients that we can't obtain easily elsewhere.

There are also animal foods which have potent anti-inflammatory effect such as oily fish/sardines, rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids(EPA/DHA), over 100% vitamin B12, co-enzyme q10 and other heart supportive nutrients.

For example take a look at the diet with the richest science base for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, promoting longevity and reducing the risk of other degenerative diseases, which is a traditional greek mediterranean diet.

Which is a diet that contains a moderate amount of animal foods, but is majority plant based. Why are all these people so heart healthy, if animal foods and cholesterol are so bad according to these vegan doctors ?

Much more research done on the mediterranean diet than there is on any strict vegan diets.
