Personally I use a Rival 6 qt. and a Rival 3 qt. slow cookers, although I mostly use a pressure cooker.

Someone, I think that it was Pumpkin, posted that she uses a roaster because it gets hot enough to boil beans. Beans apparently should be boiled because they have leptins or lectins, I can't remember which, will be destroyed by 10 mintes of boiling. Apparently they are not good for you. Most if not all slow cookers will not get to the temperature to boil the contents. Roasters have the ability to have the temperature selected by the user.

You can do a search on Amazon for roasters and should be able to find one that is suitable for your needs.

If you stick with a slow cooker make sure that you get one that has a removable crock.

As far as cookbooks you might try one of the followingn two, I have both and am well pleased by each:

JoAnn Rachor, "Fast cooking in a slow cooker every day of the year"

Robin Robertson, "Fresh From The Vegetarian Slow Cooker"

Each book has an enormous number of tips and recipes beyond the stews and chilis that I used to imagine slow cookers were exclusively used for. Read the reviews on Amazon to make a decision.
Personally I don't think that you can go wrong with either book.

Good luck on your decisions.
