This has come up many times on this forum. You can use your browser's search or find function to read the other posts.

In brief summary - it is a possible alternative if a statin is called for. As with all statin-type medications, a liver-function blood test should establish a base-line before starting, and then 6 to 12 weeks later another one to see if a significant change has occurred. Increased liver enzymes, myopathy (muscle tissue destruction) and kidney toxicity are possible side-effects. Other, less serious side effects include headaches, gas, stomach upset, and heartburn.

Now that many statins are available as generics, the cost may not be much greater for one of those, as potency and purity are more reliable than with red yeast rice.

Since red rice yeast is a powerful agent, you should always consult with your primary health care provider before taking it.
