Ive been trying to find the answer to this question for over 15 years.

There are opinions both pro and con, but so far I haven't been able to find scientific data that compares the nutrition of the heart vs the outer leaves.

I've been buying the whole lettuce because it's available locally and by looking to see if there's oxidation (brownish color) on the stem, one can usually tell how fresh it is (though some markets trim the stems daily). The hearts are usually packaged by the grower or distributor, so freshness is less obvious.

But to answer your question, without any specific information, but based on other leafy greens that have been compared, I'd guess that there isn't a whole lot of difference nutritionally.
