I did ask Dr. Essylsten about this, and he said that low-HDL, even in a person who has low total cholesterol, is NOT an ideal situation. Now, if he's changed his views about this, then I did not know that.

Also, I don't buy into the notion of "seeing results with their actual patients". Why? Because I know several people in my own family, who went on the Atkins diet and had TREMENDOUS success. One of them got their cholesterol down to 160 mg/dl, his blood pressure, blood sugar, and triglyceride levels decreased, he lost weight. His doctor took him off of his cholesterol and blood pressure meds. His doctor told him, "Whatever it is that you are doing, it is working, so continue it."

So does this mean that I am going to start promoting the Atkins diet? Of course not. In medicine and science, case studies and testimonies are all great, but, until you get results from peer-reviewed studies, I don't think it is responsible to claim something that has never been supported by a well-conducted study.
