You're right. It's a no-brainer.

An arterial bypass is a permanent detour, shunting the blocked area. Since the new tissue is typically from a vein, it has some different characteristics, so following a reversal lifestyle program is extremely important, as the bypass can build up blockages even faster than an artery.

Since the old blockages no longer have blood flowing through them, the reversal effect does not reach them.

Dr. Ornish illustrates the process with a cartoon of a man mopping up a wet floor from an overflowing sink with water flowing from the spigot. Until the source of the problem is stopped, he can't catch up on the mopping. The reversal lifestyle program turns off the spigot - the only way to stop the cause of the problem.
