Hi Paul. I, too, follow a very strict no-fat vegan diet and exercise program. I have for years. I had my cardiologist run a heart CT scan and it came back that I had an extremely high amount of coronary calcium for my age. I'm 43. I'm not too worried about it though cuz I've researched it to death and have learned that the calcified plaques are the older, stable plaques. It's the volatile, unobstructive plaques that rupture, leading to clot formation (about 80% of heart attacks are caused by the small plaques), causing a heart attack. This is why a person can pass a stress test successfully, and then the next day have a heart attack....a stress test only detects a 70% or greater blockage. These larger calcified blockages aren't the problem. Inflammation is the big nasty....and high levels of insulin. All cardiac risk factors are accompanied by high insulin levels. It's been found repeatedly that a high fasting insulin level is more predictive of heart disease than high cholesterol levels. But doctors ignore this fact and stick with the "bad plumbing" model. Preventative cardiologists are on the right track...but not the interventional cardiologists....cuz they make LOTS of money "intervening". Over 50% of people who have heart attacks have a normal or below normal cholesterol assay.
