Vegans eat no animal product whatsoever- not even products like gelatin which is made from cow hooves. Some do not even eat honey. Vegetarians do not eat meat, although they may eat eggs and drink milk. If you do not want to give up meat, there are organic foods on the market- pesticide, chemical, (antibiotic) free foods. If you do plan to give up meat, consider textured soy as a meat replacement in some of your meals. There is ground beef, chicken, 'meatballs', etc...Get yourself a good vegetarian cookbook and get acquainted with your local health food store. Many supermarkets offer vegan/vegetarian alternatives-like soy based foods but for some ingredients you'll need that health food store! Tofu is great. When you learn how to use it, it becomes a very versatile tool in meal preparation. Everything from dips to stir fry!Read about it and then experiment with it-you'll find great things to do with it.
I, too, have cut out meat and dairy (and processed sugar and wheat)but I personally feel my husband and children must make their own food decisions so I eat vegan myself and provide organic foods (meats, dairy, fruit and vegetable)to my family. Everyone gets what they are hungry for and there's no forcing or withholding of food choices for anybody. Having dealt with an eating disorder for many years, I do not want any negative attachments/attitudes to food in my house!:)
I replaced my dairy intake with soy. Takes a little getting used to so ease into it. Most likely you will find soy yogurt and soy sour cream and all kinds of goodies at your health food store-including ice cream-YUM! (Tofutti is my weakness-chocolate...*slobbers*) It's always good to be around supportive people so see if there's a vegetarian support group in your local area-or heck-there's always the internet!!!
