Subject: I am trying to be vegan......

Hello, I am a Singaporean Chinese girl and I have decided to try being vegan recently mainly because of compassion for animals and health reasons. My religion (Buddhism)also influenced me to adopt a vegetarian life. For the past two years, my diet has been 70% vegetarian. The 30% is due to my family insisting that I eat some fish and the vegetables cooked often have bits of fish/meat in it, so it's very hard for me to be 100% vegetarian. I have given up dairy and eggs very recently after having read about the horrors of the egg and dairy industries. I feel that I am ready for a vegan lifestyle.Food is not a problem for me as I prefer simple fare. The problem is my family would never take me seriously and never support my views. I am also afraid of causing inconvenience. I once told my mom that I wanted to be a vegetarian and the answer was a straight NO. She said it was too difficult to be a vegetarian admist a family (including uncles, aunts etc) of meat-eaters.It would cause my grandmother inconvenience because she usually does the cooking and I'm afraid that she may even feel insulted if I don't eat what she cooks. And she definitely won't understand my views too. Presently, I try to keep to vegan food as much as possible. Only dinner is a problem cos I have it at home. As I am not a pure vegan, it is also hard to assert myself as a vegetarian among my friends. This poses problems when they see me refusing food that contains animal products. It isn't very convincing just telling them that I prefer vegetarian food, and I don't want to offend them by talking about cruelty to animals, etc. I really hope I can get my family's support about this food issue, and get to know some vegan friends as well.
