Subject:         How to exit the Depression cycle?

I know that natural methods like exercise and diet can help with or even cure depression. However, being under the influence of depression prevents me from trying those natural methods consistently.
I never take any pills so I want to keep trying to cure or ease the depression naturally. But how to cure a disease when the disease prevents the cure? I try for a week to do what is needed, feel somewhat better and then fall back into that depressive state when I barely get done the very minimum requirements of life. Some days taking a shower is my biggest accomplishment for the day.
Please don't just say it's all in your head and "get over it". My dad almost died from clinical depression, he hasn't eaten for many days and when found was in a psychotic state not responsible for himself. Electric shock therapy is the only thing that helped him after trying dozens of pills and several hospitalizations. He's been cured and healthy for 6 years now after the ECT for which I'm forever grateful.
I'm not nearly as bad as he was but I definitely inherited the depressive tendency. The only thing I can think of is hiring someone to come and help me fulfill my plan for the day (personal assistant or a trainer..) because other people and strict schedule do help me stay on track but I cannot afford it for now.
So my question again is what to do and how to exit a depressive state when in it? Anyone who has knowledge about this subject is welcome to answer. Thank you!
