Sometimes we're so worried about our veggie diets causing deficiencies that we don't consider these things can just happen. My dad and I both had iron deficiencies as young children, and we were both fed the Standard American Diet (though not quite so "sad" back in the 40s and 60s, respectively). We were both given iron supplements, and everything turned out just fine. Since I breastfed exclusively, my own daughter was prescribed a vitamin D supplement as an infant. It included iron, and as she got older, I switched her to a multivitamin with iron. Deficiency was never a problem for her. Also, while your son's B12 is probably fine, I never assume everything is OK because the doctors say nothing. They're human, and they sometimes overlook things, so I always ask to be sure.
