Texas horse slaughter plants denied in attempt to reopen

By Ann Bagel Storck on 5/24/2007 for Meatingplace.com

It appears the two horse slaughter plants in Texas will remain closed after they were denied reprieve by both state lawmakers and the U.S. Supreme Court.

A deadline of midnight Monday passed without the Texas House authorizing a bill that would have reopened Dallas Crown Inc. in Kaufman and Beltex Corp. in Fort Worth. On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the plants' petition to overturn a federal appeals court ruling that effectively shut them down earlier this year.

The U.S. horse slaughter industry has been dealt a series of blows lately. The third U.S. horse slaughter plant, Cavel International in DeKalb, Ill., looks to be the victim of a ban on horse slaughter in Illinois, which Gov. Rod Blagojevich is expected to sign. (See Illinois lawmakers vote to close last U.S. horse slaughterhouse, Meatingplace.com, May 17, 2007.)
