This 2003 file photo shows quarantined dairy cows feeding at the Sunny Dene ranch in Mabton, Wash., during an investigation of mad cow disease. A 26th case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has been detected in a six-year-old cow from a farm near Mlada Boleslav in the centre of the Czech Republic, veterinary authorities announced.

A 26th case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has been detected in a six-year-old cow from a farm near Mlada Boleslav in the centre of the Czech Republic, veterinary authorities announced.
.
The positive test followed the routine slaughter of the cow, from a 75-strong herd, on December 4, a news release added. If confirmed, the case would be the third of so-called mad cow disease in the Czech Republic this year.
.
Authorities announced the second positive test this year on November 23 in the north-west of the country which was later confirmed.
.
In spite of the recent spate of cases, it still appears that mad cow disease peaked in the Czech Republic last year, when eight cases were identified, spokesman for the state veterinary office, Josef Duben, said.

The country's first case of BSE was discovered in June 2001 in a farm in Dusejov, in the centre of the Czech Republic. — AFP
