AFX News Limited GUERET, France (AFX) - A bull in central France has tested positive for mad cow disease, local veterinary authorities said. The Charolais, from a large herd in the central Creuse department, was slaughtered and steps were taken to track down 70 of its offspring. The case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was discovered during a routine veterinary check on animals more than 30 months old. The number of French cases of BSE has been falling steadily, from a peak of 239 in 2002 to 31 last year. France has recorded a total of 15 cases of the human form of the disease, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), since it first appeared in 1996 -- compared with more than 150 cases in the UK. newsdesk@afxnews.com afp/jsa COPYRIGHT Copyright AFX News Limited 2005.
