Life on Earth: The Story of Evolution by Steve Jenkins

From Publishers Weekly: “Grabbing the audience's attention with stunning cut- and torn-paper collage illustrations, Jenkins illuminates another corner of the science world in this cogent introduction to evolution. Here, he traces the planet's history from its fiery beginnings billions of years ago through the emergence of the first bacteria, development of such organisms as jellyfish, ferns, dinosaurs, mammals and birds, on up to humans. Posing and answering questions ("Why have so many different forms of life developed on the earth?"), Jenkins ably presents such concepts as mutation, extinction and Darwin's theory of "survival of the fittest." The information spans an impressive range; Jenkins organizes and presents it with a clarity that demonstrates his mindfulness of the audience. Spacious white backdrops allow the vigorously lifelike collage images to spring to the fore. Bright-eyed frogs appear ready to jump off the pages; a shark swims menacingly toward readers; a wooly mammoth looks soft enough to pet. Science at its most inviting. Ages 6-10. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. “ Large hardback, ex-library, excellent condition. This sells new for $16.99.

plus Darwin: Nature Reinterpreted by Piero Ventura and Gian Paola Ceserani

“Few individuals have altered the intellectual landscape of their day as profoundly as Charles Darwin. His theory of evolution caused a scandal in the 1860s and remains a provocative topic today. His famed Beagle voyage, his writings, and his discoveries are explored within the context of the society that had begun to take an active interest in the natural world.” Large hardback, ex-library, excellent condition. Variety (Religious, homeschooling, Chess …):

Linnea in Monet’s Garden by Christina Bjork and Lena Andersen

From Publisher’s Weekly: “Linnea, a fresh-faced European girl with a mop of black hair and a white smock, gives a solid lesson in art history in the gentlest way, through a first-person account. Her story is like a scrapbook, reliving a trip she took to Paris and Giverny to learn about Monet's water-lily paintings. Airy, light-filled watercolors showing Linnea in Monet's environment are juxtaposed with period photographs of the artist and reproductions of the paintings themselves. The focus is always on the specific. Monet's brushstrokes are examined (Linnea terms them "splotchy"). A section is devoted to expressionism: "Even stone walls could shimmer sometimes." Also included are Monet's biography, a family tree and a brief guide to Paris. But, it is the sense of being there, and Linnea's own enthusiasm, that carries the book.” Ages 7-up. The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder

From Publishers Weekly: “Even grownups enjoy a bedtime story every now and then, especially one that combines, as does this one, the sophistication of a novel with the whimsy of a fairy tale. … Set in an unnamed town in present-day Norway, it tells the story of Joachim, a young boy who finds a faded, handmade Advent calendar in a bookstore on the eve of December first, and begs his father to let him take it home. The next morning, when he opens the calendar's first door, Joachim discovers not just the expected picture but also a tightly folded piece of paper, the first installment of the fantastic tale of a little girl's journey through time and space to be present at the Nativity. Soon the girl's story is making unexpected intrusions into Joachim's own life, and he races to solve the mystery of the calendar before Christmas Eve. … in the end it is Gaarder's frank, friendly voice and the adorable character he has created in the inquisitive, enthusiastic Joachim that stay in the reader's mind.” Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Set of two books: The Original Picture Puzzle: Can You Spot the Differences? plus The Ultimate Picture Puzzle: Can You Spot the Differences?

From an Amazon review: “For the most part the puzzles involve two pictures of the same thing, with the second picture having a number of changes from the first picture. The changes can range from simple things like a person added to the picture to hard to spot things like a shirt being a different color. There are also several "cut up puzzles" in which the editors took a photo, cut it into 4, 6, 12 or 18 pieces, rearranged the pieces, numbered them, and you have to figure out the correct order of the pieces to solve the puzzle. There are also some puzzles with six pictures, five of which are identical and you have to find the one that is different.”
