A History of US: Making Thirteen Colonies, 1600-1740, 3rd ed., by Joy Hakim

“People are coming to America--all kinds of people. If you're European, you come in search of freedom or riches. If you're African, you come in chains. And what about the Indians, what is happening to them? Soon with the influx of so many people, thirteen unique colonies are born, each with its own story. Meet Pocahontas and John Smith in Jamestown. Join William Penn and the Quakers in Pennsylvania. Sit with the judges at the Salem witch trials. Hike over the mountains with Daniel Boone. And let Ben Franklin give you some salty advice in his Poor Richard's Almanac in this remarkable journey through the dynamic creation of what one day becomes the United States.”

Hardback with glossy pages and color illustrations; it is in very good condition. Original price $19.95, asking for $7.00ppd (within the US only).

Inanna: From the Myths of Ancient Sumer by Kim Echlin

“Long before the Bible, the Koran, and Greek and Roman mythology, the people of Sumer recorded stories of their gods and kings on cuneiform tablets. The world’s oldest epic poem, the 4,000-year-old Epic of Gilgamesh, tells of a hero who was part god, part man. But a recent discovery uncovered another, equally intriguing hero — Gilgamesh’s powerful sister, the goddess Inanna. Inanna embodies the quest for growth. Her stories describe her growth from childish inexperience and youthful exuberance into maturity as she gains the power to create, to destroy, and to name. She is a goddess of spirit and wisdom who outwits and defies the powerful, falls in love with the shepherd Dumuzi, and, like Gilgamesh, dares to seek immortality. The people of Sumer associated her with the planet Venus — radiant, strong, mysterious. Using Sumerian scholarship as a guide, Kim Echlin offers a sensitive and knowledgeable translation of the Inanna stories. Accompanied by the exquisite illustrations of Linda Wolfsgruber, these tales will interest both students of history and myth and anyone who appreciates art and poetry.”

Hardback with dust jacket, ex-library, in very good condition. New this sells for $19.95; asking for $10.00ppd (within the US only).

Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village by Laura Amy Schlitz

“Step back to an English village in 1255, where life plays out in dramatic vignettes illuminating twenty-two unforgettable characters.

Maidens, monks, and millers’ sons — in these pages, readers will meet them all. There’s Hugo, the lord’s nephew, forced to prove his manhood by hunting a wild boar; sharp-tongued Nelly, who supports her family by selling live eels; and the peasant’s daughter, Mogg, who gets a clever lesson in how to save a cow from a greedy landlord. There’s also mud-slinging Barbary (and her noble victim); Jack, the compassionate half-wit; Alice, the singing shepherdess; and many more. With a deep appreciation for the period and a grand affection for both characters and audience, Laura Amy Schlitz creates twenty-two riveting portraits and linguistic gems equally suited to silent reading or performance. Illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings by Robert Byrd — inspired by the Munich-Nuremberg manuscript, an illuminated poem from thirteenth-century Germany — this witty, historically accurate, and utterly human collection forms an exquisite bridge to the people and places of medieval England.”

Newbery medal winner. Hardback with dust jacket, ex-library, in very good condition. New this sells for $19.99; asking for $9.00ppd (within the US only).

Empires Lost and Won: The Spanish Heritage in the Southwest by Albert Marrin

“Spiced with extensively footnoted primary sources, this vivid narrative is a historical journey across three centuries of struggle for control of the American Southwest. Marrin flexes his capable storytelling skills to paint a rich portrait of the cruel conquistadores who thirsted for gold, the Pueblo Indians whose cities were destroyed, and the traders and mountain men who walked a fine line between cultures. His telling is as lively as the best fiction writing; the psychological details he plucks from diaries, letters, and autobiographies help his historical figures leap to life; and the physical details he includes will grab the reader's attention (a vivid description of how mountain men made culinary use of an entire buffalo is a good example). The final chapters about the battles between the U.S. and Mexico's General Santa Anna are a welcome improvement over dry textbook accounts of the Alamo and the Mexican War. Randy Meyer”

Out of print hardback with dust jacket, ex-library, in very good condition. New this sold for $19.00; asking for $10.00ppd (within the US only).
