During the US Civil War, my great-great-grandfather commanded a company of all-African American soldiers.

He wrote a short diary describing a number of experiences during the war, including one 3 day battle in which he lost half of the 653 men under his command.

One day two men rode into his camp...one was General Ulysses S. Grant and the other was President Abraham Lincoln. Read the description of what happened when these two men came to visit the black troops.

This is a fascinating glimpse into what the Civil War was like for my great-great-grandfather, and I think you will enjoy it:

Chicago Mayor Embraces Engine 2 Diet
